Iniciar sólidos con nuestros bebés es de las etapas más divertidas y bonitas para toda la familia. Bueno, no se si sea la más divertida para nosotros/as después de ver todo lo que debemos de limpiar cuando terminan la comida #embrasethemess.
Las arcadas pueden ser el lado incómodo del inicio de alimentación complementaria si no conocemos sobre que hacer, como identificarlas y por que deberías de sentirte segura cuando sucedan.
¿Qué es una arcada?
Mecanismo de protección para evitar que la comida entre a las vías respiratorias de tu bebé. En pocas palabras es un reflejo que protege contra el atragantamiento. ¿Ahora ya no suena tan mal, no? Piénsalo como algo que evita que tu bebé pase por un verdadero peligro. Los bebés tienen este reflejo mucho más sensible que los adultos. Es más "fácil" que tu bebé reaccione teniendo una arcada al comer, puede ser el tamaño del trozo, la textura o porque le este costando trabajo manipular el alimento en la boca.
Las arcadas pueden presentarse en los dos métodos de alimentación: tradicional o BLW/BLISS (Baby Led Weaning/ Baby Led Introduction to Solids).
Así como tu bebé no aprenderá a caminar sin caerse unas cuantas veces, es normal que las arcadas estén presentes, son señal de que estamos practicando y aprendiendo a comer.
¿Cómo puedo identificar una arcada?
Ojos llorosos
Cara roja
Boca abierta con lengua hacia afuera
Tos, llanto o sonidos como si fuera vomitar.
Es incómodo ver a tu bebé intentar manejar el alimento en su boca y que le cueste trabajo.
¿Qué hacer en caso de arcadas?
Creo que aquí lo clave es saber que NO hacer:
1.- Entrar en pánico.
Estar en calma, es algo difícil de conseguir en ese momento pero es importante para mantener el ambiente lo más tranquilo y relajado para que tu bebé pueda resolver la arcada. Si gritamos y nos asustamos, ellos también entrarán en pánico lo que puede llevar a que tu bebé se distraiga y sea mas complicado terminar el proceso de la arcada.
2.- Sacar al bebé de la silla
No hay mejor lugar para tu bebé al momento de una arcada que la silla que le brinda una postura correcta, equilibrio, soporte y seguridad. Al sacar al bebé corremos el riesgo de con el movimiento llevar a empeorar la situación
3.- Meter el dedo en su boca para ayudarlo
Al involucrarnos de esta manera, podemos empujar la comida a la parte posterior de su boca y causar un verdadero episodio de atragantamiento.
Lo mejor que podemos hacer, es dejarlos tomar el control de la situación en la que pueden pasar dos cosas:
1.- Gestiona el alimento de tal forma que logra tragarlo.
2.- Gestiona el alimento para expulsarlo de su boca.
¿Cómo saber cuando tengo que intervenir, es decir, cuando sí es atragantamiento?
Mirada fija
Piel azul o labios azules
Silencio total o sonidos finos agudos
Aquí debemos de intervenir inmediatamente con CPR, primeros auxilios. Te ampliamente tomar un curso para poder actuar de forma rápida y con seguridad en un posible evento.
El atragantamiento no tiene nada que ver con el método de alimentación de elección, no hay más riesgo si se hace BLW/BLISS VS método tradicional.
¿Qué hago para evitar atragantamiento?
1.- Postura segura:
Espalda recta, pompis apoyadas, rodillas flexionadas y pies con apoyo.
2.- Papás, mamás y cuidadores atentos en la alimentación de los bebes
Observa a tu bebé mientras come, haz movimientos exagerados al comer para que aprenda a comer imitándote.
3.- Alimentos con cortes y presentaciones adecuadas para etapa de desarrollo
Evita alimentos pequeños y redondeados, alimentos duros y firmes.
4.- Comer sin distractores
Evita la televisión o cualquier otro distractor al comer. Necesitamos todos los sentidos de tu bebé enfocados en los alimentos.
Se que es un tema incómodo de leer, pero nada es mejor que tener información que nos hagan sentir seguras/os y no permitan disfrutar más de etapa tan importante para tu bebé.
